Toy Story 3 {∞✭

When I asked to see Toy Story 3, the man at the ticket counter sounded surprised and reminded me that this particular showing was not 3D and asked if that was OK. So I reminded him that 3D movies are distracting and annoying and are like stealing: I pay twice as much for a movie that looks half as good. I’d like my 2D movie that is actually already 3D when you think about it.

Oh and by the way, Toy Story 3 was the perfect movie. Perfect.

Iron Man {2✭

Some day we’ll be able to say things like, “My kid could render better CG for that movie.” Too bad that day isn’t here. Too bad Iron Man 2, too bad. It seems that whenever this many awesome actors get together (Downey Jr., Paltrow, Cheadle, Johansson, Rockwell, Rourke, Samuel Freakin’ Jackson) the movie tends to fizzle. pffft.

Total Bummer.

An Education {4✭

Somehow this film captured it brilliantly.

When my teenagers come to me and bicker about how they hate school and it’s a total waste of time I might show them this film, then take them on an adventure, and then tell them to go back to school and read. and read what you love. I’ll tell them to read whatever makes them come alive. And you don’t find your favorite food by starving yourself.

Somewhere in the jazzy songs and sparkly dresses and dancing I was completely captivated, even though I knew it might be a mistake. This is one I’d like to own.

It was superbly satisfying.

Crazy Heart {3✭

Perhaps this movie is not for everyone. It has its own pace that unfortunately led me to check the time a couple times. I generally consider that basis for dropping stars and being forgotten. Maybe I will forget this movie. I like to think I won’t forget Bad Blake.

Bad Blake is one who has sipped every last drop. And getting a refill always meant he lost something else. He finds himself though and I think that is what matters. Heart-tugging and unsurprising the film renders true life, where things aren’t simple and where sometimes you pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try.

The music captures everything. It tells the story all on its own.

Maybe I will remember this movie, because Bad Blake is the movie.

From the film in reference to Jean’s son:

Jean: I don’t think I could live if I lost Buddy.

Bad Blake: Unfortunately, you do.
